El Malpais National Monument
El Malpais' terrain was formed by lava from ancient volcanoes. It covers a massive area in northwestern New Mexico near the border of Arizona. You will find canyons, sandstone cliffs, rock formations, cinder cones, and lava tube caves. You can also sit near the caves in the summer months and watch bats fly out at dusk.
