Introduction to Alpine, Wyoming

Alpine, Wyoming, located where the Snake River meets the Greys and Salt Rivers at Palisades Reservoir, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Its serene environment is perfect for various activities, from fishing and boating to hiking and wildlife spotting. We observed people rafting and kayaking on the Snake River, and the town is just an hour from Teton National Park, offering a calmer alternative to staying in Jackson.

Camping at Palisades Reservoir

Our camping experience at Palisades Reservoir North Dispersed Camping area was spectacular. Our campsite was near the reservoir, offering beautiful water views and surrounded by beautiful snow-tipped mountains. The area provided numerous activities, including fishing, boating, and hiking. It was also easily accessible for RVs, providing ample parking space. The tranquility of the location made it a peaceful retreat, and we were fortunate to spot wildlife such as Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, and Pelicans.

The area offers other boondocking options for those seeking alternative camping spots. These spots provide an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in nature.

Things to Do in Alpine

Alpine, Wyoming, offers a variety of activities for outdoor lovers. Fishing on the Snake River is a highlight, offering some of the best fishing in the region. Boating on the rivers and Palisades Reservoir is another popular activity. Additionally, numerous scenic overlooks, particularly along the Snake River, provide breathtaking views.

If you're looking for adventure, Alpine is well-known for its exceptional white-water rafting. The Snake River Canyon in this area offers some of the best white-water rafting experiences in the United States, with outfitters like Dave Hansen River Trips or Greys River Sports. Whether a beginner or an experienced rafter, you'll find thrilling rapids and stunning canyon views.

We also enjoyed dining at Driftwood Pizzeria, which was fantastic. Other great dining options include Yankee Doodles Cafe, The Bull Moose Saloon, or Taco Bus.

Route 89 Overview

Route 89 is a legendary highway that stretches from the Canadian border to the Mexican border, covering some of the most scenic landscapes in America. This route passes through Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, and Arizona.

Route 89 starts near the Canadian border in Montana, passing Glacier National Park. In Wyoming, the route takes you through Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. You'll encounter Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks as you continue into Utah. Finally, Route 89 brings you to Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park and Saguaro National Park.

Scenic Section Between Alpine and Hoback Junction

One of US Route 89's most scenic stretches lies between Alpine and Hoback Junction. This section offers stunning views of mountains and landscapes, especially at sunrise or sunset. The drive is filled with scenic viewpoints and wildlife-spotting areas, making it a memorable journey.

US Route 89 follows the river through the canyon, providing a picturesque route for travelers. Here, the Snake River meets the Greys and Salt Rivers at Palisades Reservoir, creating a scenic convergence of waterways surrounded by stunning mountains.

This section of the Snake River is well-known for its white-water rafting, kayaking, and apparently some of the best rapids in the United States.

At Hoback Junction, US Route 89 joins US 191, continuing to Yellowstone. This journey offers incredible views and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling in the region.
