A Little About Twin Falls, Idaho
Twin Falls is home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes, including Shoshone Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the U.S., and the breathtaking Snake River Canyon. The area offers adventure activities such as off-roading, hiking, kayaking, boating, and BASE jumping, making it perfect for thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. Twin Falls is known for Evel Knievel's attempted jump across the canyon in 1974.
With plenty of parks, trails, and family-oriented activities, Twin Falls is an ideal destination for families looking for outdoor fun and educational experiences. The mild and pleasant climate allows for year-round outdoor activities, ensuring a great experience no matter when you visit. However, do note that it can be pretty windy.
Main Interests in Twin Falls, Idaho
Shoshone Falls
Shoshone Falls, often called the “Niagara of the West,” is a must-visit. Standing 212 feet tall, it surpasses the height of Niagara Falls and spans approximately 900 feet wide. The best time to visit is in the spring, especially during April and May when water flow peaks due to snowmelt. Shoshone Falls Park offers scenic overlooks, picnic areas, and walking trails, making it an excellent spot for family outings. The falls are part of a hydroelectric project, with the Shoshone Falls Dam regulating water flow for power generation and irrigation.
Perrine Bridge
The iconic Perrine Bridge spans the Snake River Canyon near Twin Falls. At 486 feet above the Snake River and 1,500 feet long, it is one of the few legal BASE jumping sites in the U.S., attracting jumpers worldwide. The bridge, completed in 1976 and named after I.B. Perrine, a key figure in the development of Twin Falls, is also famous for its scenic views and photography opportunities.
Snake River Canyon
The Bonneville flood, which occurred 15,000 years ago, shaped the Snake River Canyon. The canyon reaches depths of up to 500 feet and stretches for over 50 miles, providing ample opportunities for exploration and adventure. Scenic drives along the canyon offer multiple waterfalls cascading off the cliffs above.
Campground Review: Balance Rock Campground
Balance Rock Campground is located south of Buhl in the Salmon Falls Creek Canyon. Nearby is Balanced Rock, which stands 48 feet tall and weighs 40 tons, balanced on a narrow pedestal.
Camping here is free; however, there are no reservations. We have a 36-foot RV, and there were only a couple of spots we could fit in. The park offers fishing opportunities. Please note that while the campground provides basic amenities such as restrooms and picnic tables, there are no showers or electricity hookups available. We recommend bringing your own water and firewood.
